Message From The Principal

I want to thank you all for your support in what was one of the most unusual starts to a school term we have ever seen.  Together, we have been able to make the best of this situation and ensure your child’s safety and continuity of learning.

15 May 2020

Today, the State Government announced changes to education based on a review of current arrangements and updated health advice.

As of Monday, 18 May 2020 all students are expected to attend school, except for those students medically referred to learn from home.

This means students are either:

  • at school;
  • have a medical referral to learn from home; or
  • recorded as absent if they do not attend.

Over the last three weeks we have seen 80% of our students return to school, which has been fantastic.

Current health advice states that schools remain safe for staff and students and should remain open.  We want to make sure all children get the best education possible, which is why attending school is so important.  We are here to make sure all children are learning and there’s no doubt, schools are the best place for them to learn.

For parents with medical advice that their child should not attend school, we will work with you to support your child’s learning from home.  If you feel your child is in this category, please do not hesitate to contact your relevant Year Coordinator and we will work together on next steps.

If your child does not attend school without a medical reason, they will be marked as absent and will not be provided a learning program.

The extra cleaning and hygiene practices implemented at the start of Term 2 will continue and as part of the social distancing measures, we continue to ask parents/carers to drop children at the school gate and not enter the school grounds.

The State Government will continue to make decisions based on the best health advice. Thank you for your continued support as we move forward.

If you have any questions please contact your child's Year Coordinator on 9621 0000.
Kind Regards,
Marisa Del Pin

The Northam Senior High School Development Day has been rescheduled to Friday 29 May. Students are not required to attend on this day. Northam Primary School and Avonvale Primary School have School Development Day on this day also.

5 May 2020

Good evening,

Over the last 5 days of Term 2 Northam SHS student attendance has been close to 60% per day.

The timetable is operating as normal so all classes are running and teachers are teaching face to face.

There has been no further advice from the Premier or the Minister of Education regarding changes to schools but this school is open and operating with extra precautions to keep students, staff and visitors safe.

We currently have 2 cleaners in the school throughout the school day and are awaiting Department of Education clearance for a third cleaner to commence.  High contact areas are cleaned regularly.  Students are reminded to use good personal hygiene and physical distancing.

I am informed by staff that some students are coming to school tired because they have been staying up late at night.  I encourage parents/carers to get all students (attending school and learning from home) into a good routine of going to bed at a reasonable time, preferably before 10.00 pm, and waking in time to be ready for their school day.

When parents/carers and schools are advised that students are to attend as normal, these good routines will mean that students are more able to engage with their education and achieve better results.

If students are learning from home and completing work on Connect, they must submit their work to their teacher via Connect.

If students are completing work at home through work packages, I will be sending an email on Wednesday advising parents/carers of how they can return them for Week 1 and 2 and for the collection of work packages for Weeks 3 and 4, if the current situation is still valid.

We look forward to more students attending school on a regular basis for face to face learning.

Take care and stay safe.
